Aaron Watkins Jr

I am a broadcast student in the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park, and will be graduating in December 2013. I write for TurtleSportsReport.com, a member of FOX Sports’ Scout.com network, covering high school football and basketball recruiting, as well as the Maryland women’s basketball team.

I have experience shooting and editing video, doing on-camera stand-ups and interviews, and putting together news packages. I am also comfortable working in a news studio, both on-camera and in the control room.

While my education has been geared toward multimedia and broadcast news reporting, I also enjoy writing and more traditional forms of journalism. I have written for printed and online campus publications, including The Public Asian and the Black Explosion.

I am extremely passionate about sports, and having been a high school athlete, I was always interested in becoming a sports writer. However, I have a growing passion for more consequential news. One of my favorite pieces of work was a story I wrote for The Public Asian about Ron Paul during the 2012 Republican Presidential Nomination race. I talked to members of Maryland’s Youth for Ron Paul chapter, which was the largest in the nation, to find out why the oldest presidential candidate had such appeal among youths.

Ultimately, I aspire to be a political beat writer, business reporter, or anything that will put me in a position to write news stories that matter.
